Vipers U10s win Steyning Tournament
Possunt quia posse videntur - they can do it because they think they can.
Such was the approach of Storrington Vipers U10s at the Steyning 6-a-side
tournament on Saturday. Firm belief in their abilities after a good
season, they marched through the qualifying group with sound goalkeeping, a
steady defence, creativity in midfield and an eye for goal up front. They
started with a draw with Steyning and followed this with victories over
East Grinstead, Roffey Robins and a sound comprehensive 5-0 demolition of
Cranleigh. At times they played quite excellent football and turned in a
much sounder performance than their more illustrious counterparts managed
in the evening against USA. The semi-final saw a 2-0 victory over
Partridge Green and the final was won 2-1 over East Grinstead through sheer
effort and determination, with goals from Heasman and Solomon. Top scorer
was Fox with 6 goals. For coach Hartley, whose joy was in abundance at the
final whistle and when the trophy was lifted, it was a fitting finale to
the season.
The second Storrington team were at times unlucky and drew two and lost two
in the group and did not progress.

| U16 Win Julian Butler Memorial Trophy |
The Vipers playing season came to a grand finale today with the fun day followed by the Chairmans Xi v Mick Suters "Butchers U16's" for the Julian Butler Memorial Trophy. The Chairmans squad were slow to start (having filled themselves with the Butchers Burgers just prior to the match- Thanks for supplying the BBQ meat Mick!) resulting in a quick goal just under the bar which the chairmans keeper had neither the reach or ability to save - this was followed by a truly atrocious pass by an unnamed defender across goal to allow the U16's to score there second. Things then settled for a while and the Chairmans Xi started to find their positions, and ability to kick the strange round thing! At half time the score (I think!) was 4-1 to the U16. The Chairmans Xi crawled to the dressing room for the half time team talk, and like Forest Gumps leg braces, they threw off their Zimmer Frames for the 2nd half. Assisted by the referees problem in counting to 11 they scored after 10 minutes and held the U16's for 20 or so minutes, until the U16 striker headed the ball out of the goalkeepers hands, and to the shock of the Chairmans Xi the goal stood!!! So the U16 were deserved 5-2 (or 3?) winners in their final swan song in Vipers colors and we wish them all the very best for the future and thank all those who have helped them over the years! | Julian Butler Storrington Vipers Manager and Coach |
| It is with great regret that I find myself writing this document concerning my friend and fellow coach, Julian. As some of you may know Julian Butler passed away on the Wednesday 10th March after a very short but very dignified battle against his illness, Julian was a founder of the Vipers team that I have found myself in caretaker charge of over recent months, and as such was responsible for taking a group of small boys at Under 8 and passing on to them his joy of football and sport in general, so much so that thankfully Julian was able to share in the Joy of his team winning the under 12 D league this year with two games to spare, this has been the best of seasons and the worst too.Always a credit to himself and his team, Julian was a very keen sportsman not just at football where he played himself for Watersfield with distinction, being player of the year for both managers and his fellow team members on several occasions, but at other sports too, taking part in the great south run and being a keen Tennis, golf and Badminton player.Julian started his working life as a stable lad for Guy Harwood, with aspirations to become a jockey, something tells me that he would have excelled at that too, given the chance, but that didn't work out and Julian found himself a job at the West Sussex Golf Club, where he proved his dedication and commitment over twenty years service.Julian always gave his best for 'his team', and always enjoyed taking part in the fun day Chairman's 11, against the Under 16 matches, and I am pleased that there will be memorial cup named in his honour for these matches in future.
Julian will be missed by us all and I have been privileged to know him and to call him friend. Our thoughts are with Julian's family at this very sad time.Steve Good. Vipers U12 |

| Calling Parents, Managers, & Coaches! |
| At the Vipers this year we are looking at several ways to drive the Club forward. One such thing is trying to get a FA qualified referee on each team (as well as a FA Level 1 coach).
You may ask why? The answer is twofold.
1) A qualified referee gains more respect from Managers, Coaches and Players because of his rules knowledge and the training to correctly deal with players and diffuse hostile situations.
2) As a club it is "Best Practice"
To spearhead this, I am currently doing a course myself, which I am 3/4 of the way through, and have refereed 3 matches. What have I found?
1) I did not know as much about the rules as I thought
2) I've realised how much harder it is to referee a match correctly than it looks, so now have greater respect for the man in the middle
3) Its very rewarding to do
4) I feel a lot fitter!
So the challenge goes out to all teams to put someone forward for the course preferably a coach or manager - some teams run lean on managers and coaches though, so come on parents (or siblings older than the age they would refereeing!) see what you can do to help your team!

| Chairman's XI v U15 Match Report |
The season has been closed out with a very enjoyable weekend for all Vipers players who took part in both the Awards Evening and the Fun Day. We would like to thank all the players families, and friends for supporting these events so well, and to all the coaches for their assistance in making them possible.
The Chairmans Xi took on the Mick Suters Butchers U15 squad in the season finale today in a very close match. The Chairmans squad had a good run of play in the first half leading to a well deserved goal, and continually pushed the U15 back. However, the U15 came out a different team for the second half (presumably after talk of “mincemeat” by their manager at half time!) and kept pressing the chairmans Xi back into there own half and threatening goal. The equaliser came from a great free kick from Guy West that beat the Chairmans keeper just inside his post. The teams could not be separated at full time so it was down to a penalty shootout. After 5 penalties each the score was tied and we were in to sudden death. The Chairmans keeper finally managed to save one, which left Chairmans captain Steve Tuhey the opportunity to close the match out, which he duly did. A great game that went to the wire. I am sure the Butcher is already planning next years revenge! |
